The Fifth Day is where I begin

Today is the fifth day.  I have a tingling that comes and goes from the drainage tubes, and is slightly reminiscent of breastfeeding my children, long ago.  The thought saddens me.

Five days ago I woke to a haze of pain and frustration.  This was DAY surgery.  I was to be sent home without pain meds – nothing but over-the-counter Tylenol.  Screw that.  My breasts had just been removed and I was not going home without a crutch.  I left with a script for Tylenol with codeine.  The realities of breast cancer were beginning.
